Dogtoberfest event slated for weekend

Dogtoberfest is scheduled to celebrate man’s best friend Saturday and Sunday at Skip Fordyce Harley-Davidson in Riverside.

The event, nicknamed Hogs and Dogs, is a fundraiser for the Riverside County Department of Animal Services.

Saturday will include a costume contest for pets and their people, pet adoptions, vaccinations, micro-chipping, K-9 demonstrations by the Riverside Police Department, motorcycles, food, music, agility demonstrations, behavior training and pet adoptions.

“It’s a real laid back kind of affair,” said John Welsh, the department’s public information chief. “It’s just a chance to be silly and dress up your dogs.”

Sunday will include pet adoptions and a motorcycle poker run.

Last year’s event raised more than $3,000 that went to dog cots called Kuranda beds that keep the canines off the cold concrete floor. It also found homes for 37 dogs.

Adoptions are an important part of the day, Welsh said.

“It’s a great day for people, if they are interested in a dog, to give a dog a home,” he said.

Skip Fordyce, the Riverside County Community Health Agency Department of Animal Services and Death Row Dogz Charities Inc. sponsor the event.
