Friends for life holds hollywood gala fundraiser

The local nonprofit organization Friends For Life held a fundraiser gala at the First Street Gallery on Saturday night.
The Hollywood-themed evening included a murder mystery and a silent auction and was catered by Six Rivers Brewery.
Friends for Life volunteers wrote to various celebrities, such as John Travolta, Julie Andrews and Mary Tyler Moore, who sent back autographed memorabilia for the silent auction, according to President Linda Hall-Martin. Many local businesses also donated various objects to the silent auction, which filled the back room of the gallery.
Hall-Martin said this event usually raises approximately $7,000 each year and is the largest source of funds the organization receives. The money generated by the event lasts the organization six months, and is then supplemented with grants and smaller fundraisers, Hall-Martin said.
Friends For Life works to find homes for homeless animals by taking them out of shelters and placing them in foster homes until they can find a permanent home. Aside from foster and matchmaking services, the organization also provides spay/neuter services and basic dog obedience classes.
Friends for Life recently formed an alliance with the Humboldt County Animal Shelter to enable the nonprofit organization to help the shelter provide medical and transportation services that the shelter does not have the resources to do.
Local theater directors Carol Escobar and Sue Greene worked with the six-person cast to write the murder mystery script, which incorporated characters Rentin Tin, Clifford Leashly, CheChe Huahua, Benji Aboyeur, Toto and Gromet Baskerville.
The mystery surrounded the true ownership of star poodle Ms. Chip, who won a Hollywood contract from starring in a Fox reality TV show. Throughout the evening, the cast of the mystery remained in character as they mingled with the crowd.
