Parents start brain-tumor-research event

Parents of a 12-year-old lacrosse player who died from a brain tumor in 2006 have created a foundation, Bryan’s Dream, in their son’s name and a March 6 fundraiser to help raise money to fund research for a cure and to assist other children with brain cancer and their families.

Nancy and Tim Opremcak founded Bryan’s Dream in their son’s memory and organized a series of fundraising events that took place in 2006. This year’s first event, “Night of Hope and Dreams” will take place from 7 to 11 p.m. in the Sherwood Room at The Forest Lodge in Warren. Tickets for the evening will go on sale later this month. The evening will include cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, music and silent and live auctions. Proceeds will benefit Bryan’s Dream Foundation to assist children with brain tumors and their families.

According to the foundation’s Web site, http://www.bryansdream.org/, brain tumors are a leading cause of cancer death in children, and an estimated 2,200 children were expected to be diagnosed with brain tumors in the United States in 2005. Pediatric brain tumor research is under-funded, despite the extraordinary advances in molecular genetics, which are waiting to be translated into curative therapies. Survival rates have improved only slightly in the past 25 years.
