Mud Run Fundraising Event – Here is a great example of how to create a memorable fundraising event by giving things a twist like making everyone get dirty while raising funds for charity.

It seems like I’m always harping about the need to differentiate your fundraising event by making it buzzworthy, i.e., something that gets people talking about it. If you want to make your event more than just a fun run for cancer, why not make it memorable by adding in lots of mud and then making all the participants crawl through it?

The Bill Bottino Mud Run for Cancer has done just that and, as a result, its growing in popularity every year.

In 2010, just 200 people competed. In 2011, over 1,000 competed and raised over $100,000. And now in 2012, this mud run fundraiser drew over 2,000 competitors and hopes to double last year’s record-setting total for funds raised!

Money was raised at the Mud Run in a number of different ways. There were almost 90 teams, ranging in size from 2 to 60 members, competing for various awards. Many of them dressed for the part in flashy outfits and with filthy names such as “Dirty and I Know It,” “Dirty Girls” and “Dirty Hicks.”

Depending on when and where they registered, competitors were charged between $49 and $85. Some teams also raised additional money, and multiple auctions and raffles were held. Online donations contributed another $30,000.

The event fundraiser was much more than just a romp in the mud, featuring four live bands, lots of kids activities, and a large tailgate party.

Master of ceremonies Donald Fauerbach kicked things off by declaring: “You guys are the heroes — now go get dirty!”
