CHARLOTTE – Students and faculty at Charlotte Country Day School are in mourning Monday after the death of a student during a charity event.
Rachel Giblin, 15, was killed Saturday morning while participating in the annual “Breakaway to the Beach,” a bike ride from Rockingham, N.C., to North Myrtle Beach, S.C., to raise money for MS research.
She was riding on a tandem bike with her brother, Tommy, when they were struck by a truck pulling a utility trailer on U.S. 15/401 in South Carolina. Giblin died in the crash. Her brother and mother were taken to the hospital in serious condition.
Giblin’s tennis coach, Calvin Davis, was close with the family. He says Rachel had a way of brightening everyone’s day.
“Rachel was almost like the perfect child,†he said. “She always brought life to me because no matter how hard I would drive her sometimes on the tennis court, she would always come back with a smile and say that she was working hard and that she would get it.â€
This was the first fatality in the 21-year history of the “Breakaway to the Beach†bike ride.
Charlotte Country Day will hold a general assembly Monday and counselors will be on hand for any students who need their services.
